Creative Expression Anyone of any age or gender can be the victim of a traumatic event. Having the courage
and vocabulary to express your feelings with a counselor can be difficult and challenging. The use of
art and other visual media to create non-verbal interaction in a safe and comfortable treatment setting can
be a non-threatening and helpful experience. Through discussion with a counselor, a person can gain
insight both intellectually and emotionally by connecting the meaning of the art activity to his or her own
life situation. By focusing on the art activity, many aspects of one's self, possibly previously hidden, may
become clear. The person learns through the activity of creating something.
