Creative Expression

Anyone of any age or gender can be the victim of a traumatic event. Having the courage and vocabulary to express your feelings with a counselor can be difficult and challenging. The use of art and other visual media to create non-verbal interaction in a safe and comfortable treatment setting can be a non-threatening and helpful experience. Through discussion with a counselor, a person can gain insight both intellectually and emotionally by connecting the meaning of the art activity to his or her own life situation. By focusing on the art activity, many aspects of one's self, possibly previously hidden, may become clear. The person learns through the activity of creating something.

Legacy House staff utilizes the techniques of creative expression based on the knowledge that every individual, whether trained or untrained in art, has the ability to express their inner thoughts.

Art is a way of stating mixed, poorly understood feelings in an attempt to bring them into clarity and order (Maclagan 1979).
