Pregnant Women/Mothers of Young Children in Family Violence
Anyone at any age or gender can be a victim of family violence. Women who are pregnant are at an
increased risk of becoming a victim of family violence. Victims suffer the feelings of anger, fear, shame, anxiety and
guilt. The silent victims are often the unborn children of these pregnant women. Family violence is one of the leading
causes of infant mortality and birth defects.
While Legacy House provides services to family violence victims of any age or gender, it also provides specialized
services to pregnant women and mothers of young children. The Family Violence Coordinator at Legacy House, in
collaboration with Healthy Start, provides emotional support, crisis intervention, victim advocacy and referrals into the
health care system for pregnant women to ensure a healthy pregnancy, healthy baby and healthy child through
age two (2). For more information, call 317.554.5272.
