Leaking Underground Tank Source of Gasoline Odors
The Marion County Health Department, Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the Indianapolis Department of Public Works are continuing to investigate a leaking underground gasoline storage tank.
Residents in the area of Raymond Street and Keystone reported smelling a gasoline odor. Officials from the three agencies have been investigating the source of the leak and determined it was coming from the Village Pantry / Marathon station at 2360 East Raymond. Approximately 120 gallons of gasoline may have leaked out.
The gasoline has entered the sewer system and the smell appears to be most apparent in homes with basements. Vapor levels have been tested and although measurable, they are nowhere near explosive levels. There is no public health risk associated with this leak at this time.
The storage tank has been pumped but vapors are continuing to linger.
As a precautionary measure and to reassure residents impacted by the leak, health officials have gone door-to-door talking to residents or leaving business cards to explain what has happened and what they might do if they notice a gasoline odor in their home. These steps include making sure plumbing traps are full of water as a way to prevent vapors from entering; cracking a window slightly, especially in the basement; placing a wet rag or taping down plastic over the basement floor drain or sump pump pit.
Anyone with concerns can contact the Marion County Health Department at (317) 221-2266.
