Program Data - continued
The vast majority of program participants were from minority backgrounds (80 percent) with health insurance
coverage (90 percent); however, for low-income minority families, a variety of non-financial barriers frequently contribute to
inadequate health service access and utilization.
Identifying unmet health needs in a reliable manner is just one step in improving access to care for this population of
children. Improving access to appropriate preventive services through regular medical/dental care requires identifying
and addressing access barriers that are experienced by children and their families. Project S.H.A.P.E. has the ability
and capacity to gather a vast amount of information regarding our children's unmet health needs. Project S.H.A.P.E.
will identify those needs and develop strategies that will bridge the gap of health
disparities among our low-income children and bolster child health care systems in Marion County.
