Services - continued
Vision Screening
Trained volunteers conduct a snellen letter or picture test to determine a potential need for vision correction. Referral
criteria are based upon failing the test in either or both eyes.
Lead Screening
High lead levels have been known to cause problems with brain development, growth and behavior. Children six years and
younger will receive a finger stick to draw blood for lead level testing. The blood will be sent to the public health
laboratory of the
Marion County Health Department for evaluation. The lead program of the Marion County Health
Department will provide further testing and management of children with elevated lead levels.
Behavior Screening
Emotional and physical health are equally important for children. The Pediatric Symptom Checklist is a 35-item survey
completed by the parents as they complete the child's health history. This will be used to identify children with possible
emotional or behavioral problems. Children that are 11 years and older will also complete a similar survey to
identify problems not identified by the parents.
